Standard Poodle Health
Standard Poodle Health
Standard Poodles are generally a healthy and long-lived breed, but like all dogs, they have some genetic predispositions to certain health conditions. With our responsible breeding practices and advanced health testing, we take measures to minimize risks.
Here’s an overview of health concerns in Standard Poodles and preventative measures to keep them thriving.

Possible Health Issues in Standard Poodles

Orthopedic Health • Hip Dysplasia: Poor hip joint formation can lead to arthritis. • Prevention: OFA testing of parents, maintaining a lean weight, controlled exercise, joint supplements.
Eye Health • Progressive Retinal Atrophy (PRA): A genetic condition causing gradual vision loss. • Prevention: DNA testing of breeding dogs (PRA-prcd test). • Cataracts: Clouding of the eye lens, leading to vision impairment. • Prevention: Eye exams (CERF/OFA Eye Certification) of parents.
Neurological & Immune Disorders • Sebaceous Adenitis (SA): An autoimmune condition causing hair loss and skin infections. • Prevention: Genetic screening, routine skin care, omega-3s for skin health. • Addison’s Disease: A hormonal disorder affecting the adrenal glands, leading to lethargy, vomiting, and weakness. • Prevention: No genetic test yet, but awareness of symptoms is key. Blood tests can help early detection.
Heart Health • Dilated Cardiomyopathy (DCM): A condition where the heart muscle weakens, leading to heart failure. • Prevention: OFA cardiac testing, taurine-rich diet, and regular veterinary checkups.
Autoimmune Disorders • Hypothyroidism: Low thyroid hormone levels causing weight gain, skin issues, and lethargy. • Prevention: Routine bloodwork to monitor thyroid function.
Bloat (Gastric Dilatation-Volvulus, GDV) • A life-threatening condition where the stomach twists, cutting off blood supply. • Prevention: Feeding multiple small meals, avoiding exercise right after eating, and considering prophylactic gastropexy surgery in high-risk dogs.
General Preventative Care Health Testing: We already test our parents to exceed CHIC standards, which helps prevent many inherited issues.
Routine Veterinary Checkups: Annual exams, bloodwork, and heart screenings. High-Quality Nutrition: Balanced diet with proper vitamins, omega-3s, and taurine. Regular Exercise: Helps maintain strong muscles and prevents obesity.
Mental Stimulation: Standard Poodles are highly intelligent—training, enrichment, and puzzle toys keep them engaged. Our breeding program’s commitment to health testing and temperament screening ensures our puppies have the best foundation for a long, healthy life!
